Gateway: How do I add a Remote to my Gateway?

Modified on Thu, 7 May at 11:57 AM

Pairing remotes to shades controlled by a gateway requires that the remote also be paired to the gateway. To pair your remote to your gateway:

  1. Reset the remote:

  1. Standard/Plus:

  1. Using a paperclip or similar, press and hold the programming button on the back of the remote for 15 seconds. While holding the button on the remote, the LED will flash through the following colors: a flashing green, followed by a flashing amber, followed by a rapid flashing red, and then the LED will turn off completely. Continue holding the button until the LED turns off. Once the LED is off, release the button. The LED will flash once more to indicate battery status of the remote; green is good, amber is low, red should be replaced immediately.

  1. Premium:

  1. Press and hold the right/menu button until the remote takes you into the menu (Channel, Shade, and ZWave options).

  1. Press and release the down arrow to bring the cursor (arrow pointing to the right on the screen) down to “ZWave.” Quickly press and release right/menu (less than one second) to select it.

  1. Use the down arrow to bring the cursor down past “Associate”. This will take you to a second page of options; continue down until the cursor is on “Reset,” then press and release right/menu to select it.

  1. The screen will read “Confirm Reset to Like New?” Use the up arrow to put the cursor on “Like New?” Press and hold the right/menu button until the screen on the remote goes back to “Channel 1.”

  1. Open the motorization app. If it has not already been done, setup your gateway (see Quick Start) and transfer your shades to the gateway. If using a Premium remote, it is recommended to transfer your shades in sequential order for ease of programming the remote in a later step.

  1. Note: All shades that will be controlled by a remote must be transferred to the gateway before the remote is paired to the gateway.

  1. If the app is not already on the screen that controls your shades, tap the “Shades” tab in the bottom left corner. Tap the “+” on this screen to add a device.

  1. Select “Remote” from the list. Then select if you are adding a Standard (2-Button), Plus (Single-Channel), or Premium (Multi-Channel) remote.

  1. The app will prompt you to confirm power on the remote being programmed. Once power is confirmed, tap “Next.”

  1. The app will start a 1-minute timer. While this timer is counting down, follow the process below to put the remote into a pairing mode

  1. Standard/Plus:

  1. Using a paperclip or similar, press and hold the programming button on the back of the remote for about 3 seconds. When the remote LED begins flashing green, release the button. The LED should go to a solid green shortly after released, and the app should report the inclusion progress as a percentage readout.

  1. Once pairing is completed, the app will prompt you to name the remote and, if desired, assign it to a room. If pairing multiple remotes, tap “Add more devices” to continue pairing; otherwise, tap “I’m Done Adding Devices”

  1. If the remote LED goes solid green, but the app does not prompt you to name a new device, wait for the timer on the app to time out and then exit the device wizard. The remote will still have joined the network; proceed to the next step to associate your remote to your shade(s).

  1. Premium:

  1. Press and hold the right/menu button to get into the menu.

  1. Use the down arrow to put the cursor on ZWave and press and release right/menu to select it.

  1. Use the down arrow to put the cursor on Learn and press and release right/menu to select it.

  1. If successful, the remote should report “Learned Node” followed by a number. The app should then prompt you to name the remote and, if desired, assign it to a room. If pairing multiple remotes, tap “Add more devices” to continue pairing; otherwise, tap “I’m Done Adding Devices”

  1. If the remote reports “Learned Node [#]” but the app does not prompt you to name a new device, wait for the timer on the app to time out and then exit the device wizard. The remote will still have joined the network; proceed to the next step to associate your remote to your shade(s).

  1. Once all remotes have been paired to the gateway, the remotes can then be associated to their respective shades:

  1. Standard/Plus:

  1. Take the remote to the shade you want to pair it to; access to the shade programming button will be required.

  1. Using a paperclip or similar, quickly tap (less than one second) the programming button on the back of the remote. The front of the remote should begin alternating green repeatedly (only one side of the remote will light up at a time).

  1. While the remote is alternating green, press and hold the button on the shade for about 3 seconds, until the LED on the shade begins flashing green, then release. The shade should jog after the button is released; both the remote and shade LED should go to a solid green. The shade should now be operable with the remote

  1. Repeat for each shade you want to be paired to the same remote, up to 12 shades per remote. All shades paired to a Standard or Plus remote will operate as a group.

  1. The premium remote has two different methods of pairing shades to it. Associate will require going shade by shade and accessing the shade programming button on each, but allows you to specify the order in which the shades are added to the remote and work around shades you don’t want to be on a given remote. “Find” does not require access to the button on the shades, but will instead find all shades within range that are on the same network (paired to the gateway). If all shades are found at once, they will join the remote in the same order they were paired to the gateway:

  1. Associate:

  1. Take the remote to the shade you want to pair it to; access to the shade programming button will be required.

  1. On the remote, press and hold the right/menu button to get into the menu.

  1. Use the down arrow to put the cursor on ZWave; press and release right/menu to select it.

  1. Use the down arrow to put the cursor on Associate; press and release right/menu to select it. The remote will read “Associate press device button” and start counting down from 20.

  1. Before the remote finishes counting down, press and hold the programming button on the shade for about 3 seconds, until the LED on the shade begins flashing green, then release. The shade should jog after the button is released. The remote should read “Associate shade [#] added”

  1. Repeat the above for all shades desired to be on the remote. Once all shades are added, assign your shades to the desired channels: Z-Wave: Assigning channels on the Z-Wave Premium Remote : Support Center

  1. Find – This process finds all available shades within range that are on the same network (paired to the gateway). This does not require access to the shade programming button and will add shades to the remote in the same order they were added to the gateway, if they can all be found at once. Note: All shades should be powered for these steps. Any shade not powered will not be found.

  1. On the remote, press and hold the right/menu button to get into the menu.

  1. Use the down arrow to put the cursor on Shade; press and release right/menu to select it.

  1. Use the down arrow to put the cursor on Find; press and release right/menu to select it.

  1. Use the up arrow to put the cursor on Begin; press and release right/menu to select it. The remote will begin looking through the network for shades.

  1. Depending on how many shades have been added to the gateway, this process can take some time. When the remote is finished searching, the screen should read “Find shade found [x] shades” where x will be the number of physical shades it was able to find. If this number does not match the number of shades paired to the gateway, some shades may have been out of range. Take the remote closer to some of the further shades and follow the above again to try to find those shades.

  1. In the case that not all shades were found at once, subsequent “Find” processes will only yield shades that were missed on the first pass. I.e. if you have 10 shades, and the first “Find” process found 7, “Find” will only report up to 3 at most on the next pass. This may re-organize the sequence of the shades in the remote compared to the gateway.

  1. Once all shades are found, assign your shades to the desired channels: Z-Wave: Assigning channels on the Z-Wave Premium Remote : Support Center
