How do I Operate My Bottom Up/Top Down Shades with My Remote?

Modified on Thu, 7 May at 12:31 PM

Bottom Up/Top Down shades using ZWave motors require the use of the 12-channel remote to function properly. Once the shade is paired to the remote, it needs to be assigned to its own individual channel to be able to operate the middle rail. They can be paired to group channels, but control of the middle rail will be lost on the group channel, resulting in the shade operating like a “standard” bottom up only shade, only raising and lowering the bottom rail with the group.

While on an individual channel, the shade will move the bottom rail in response to a single tap on the up/down arrows. The middle rail will respond to a double tap of the up/down arrows. If you move a rail in the direction that will bring it closer to the opposing rail, and the opposing rail is not resting at its current limit, both rails will move in tandem until the shade is stopped using the home button, or until one or both rails reach their limit in the given direction.

As an example, if your shade is in the bottom stack position (bottom rail all the way down, middle rail halfway down, obstructing the bottom half of the window) and you do a single tap on the up arrow to raise the bottom rail, both rails will begin raising at the same time. If left to run on their own, the middle rail will stop when it reaches its upper limit (where it meets the headrail, by default) of the shade while the bottom rail continues to run to its upper limit and then stopping on its own, separately.

Adjusting limits for the middle rail requires using the motorization app; this function is not available through the remote.
